Baalzebub: an old school turn-based roguelike for Windows, MacOS and Linux on Steam!

Check your mobile app store for iOS / Android versions.

The Game

We aimed to create an easy to play and easy to control (especially on mobile touch screens) turn-based hack and slash dungeon crawler survival game resembling the Rogue-like classics from the past times. The game features some of the genre's most iconic features, such as the permadeath, limited inventory, the item weight calculations, armor wear / degradation, food hunting, hidden items and traps, spells, enemies able to steal your stuff, randomized dungeon environment and retro graphics. There are no intros, guides or hand-holding. You need to discover the gameplay mechanics by yourselves. There are no cheats or power-ups you can buy. There is a global Hall of Fame, so you can compete with friends. Baalzebub is available for mobile operating systems, just browse your devices's app store. If you find out that we should change something or add anything into the game to make it better, feel free to contact us. We look forward to receiving some feedback.

The Story

You do not remember how this happened or who you are. All of a sudden you found yourself in Hell and you want to get out. The only way seems to lead through the 14 levels of Hell. Each level except for the first one is ruled by a boss holding the exit portal key. Since we are in Hell, the level bosses happen to be the Hell's most important fallen angels such as Lucifer, Mammon, Dantalion, Furcas, Zagan, Belphegor or Asmodeus. They are very strong, yet any of them has a vulnerability you might want to discover.

Game Controls

Swipe left, right, up or down to move your hero and to attack a nearby enemy creature. Tap nearby locations to set spell cast targets and to shoot arrows (with a bow equipped and arrows in backpack). You can equip armor items to your hero's body. The equipped items wear when used. The backpack weight does matter. It affects the stamina and health params significantly. Make sure you watch the health and stamina all the time, because with zero health your hero will die forever.
When entering a new level (also the first level), some items are hidden by default. This is especially true for the level map and the exit portal. You need to find the red scroll to uncover the hidden properties. Such a scroll is unique and it is carried by a random opponent.

Here comes a brief description of roguelike gaming genre, in case you wish to learn more about it:

Roguelike games are a sub-genre of role-playing games (RPGs) that are known for their randomly generated levels, permadeath, and turn-based gameplay. The term "roguelike" originates from the 1980 game Rogue, which is considered one of the earliest examples of the genre. In a roguelike game, each time a player starts a new game, the levels and items are randomly generated, making each playthrough unique. The player is tasked with exploring the randomly generated dungeons, fighting monsters and acquiring powerful items, with the goal of reaching the final level and defeating the end boss.

One of the defining features of roguelike games is permadeath, meaning that when the player's character dies, the game is over and the player must start a new game from the beginning. This adds a sense of challenge and urgency to the gameplay, as players must carefully weigh their decisions and strategize in order to survive.

Roguelike games are typically turn-based, meaning that the player and enemies take turns making moves. This allows players to think through their decisions and plan out their moves, making it an ideal genre for those who enjoy strategic gameplay.

In recent years, the popularity of roguelike games has skyrocketed, and the genre has evolved to include new gameplay mechanics, such as procedurally generated graphics and more complex storylines. Despite these changes, the core gameplay mechanics of randomly generated levels, permadeath, and turn-based gameplay remain central to the roguelike genre.
